Thrifting in NC for Easter Weekend

We hit the road last weekend for a trip to NC to visit my family. This is Lilly...my Mom is her slave. I took a few pictures of some of Mom's vignettes.

Laundry room- I have always been afraid of the Chinese sprinkler...

More Great Room....

We ate, visited, ate more, yard saled and thrifted all weekend!!! One of the most interesting places we went was the Goodwill Outlet in Winston-Salem. It was a whole new experience for us! It was huge and filled with waist level bins of Goodwill rejects. You just had to dig! Then you put your buggy on the scales and paid for your treasure by the pound! When they brought out a new bin the crowds would descend on it and it was "every man for himself"!!! That's when we drew the line!!

But, we had a good time and ended up stopping at another one on the way home in Greenville, SC. That one was more expensive - I think it was $1.19 a pound... This is something I thought was interesting so I tossed it in my buggy.. When we got home I researched and found that it was a Dansk peppermill and salt shaker. We put it on ebay and quickly got a GOOD offer to "Buy it Now" !

I think this tiny girl is so sweet and she is marked Occupied Japan. She was at the bottom of a bin- perfect - no chips. She also has gone to ebay!

These were in the bottom of a bin, too. They are English Mudlen End pottery cottages.

And here is Andy, all 34 inches of him! He is handmade with great embroidery on his face. I hope he finds a good home!

This old humidor came from a yard sale. I thought it was worth $10 for makeover. Mom thought I paid too much. My hubby said the couple were arguing after I put it in the car because she wanted to sell it for $50. I would not think of paying that much in the condition it is in!

The copper lined shelf is to keep the cigars fresh.

Finally I will leave you with a picture of Skinny- the other cat that owns my Mom! I'm going to visit Leigh at Bloggeritaville for Thrifty Thursday....as long as we have electricity....the weather tonight is horrible and Alabama has suffered a lot today. Please keep the families that have lost so much in your prayers!

Thrifty Thursday

I've been out at the thrift stores and yard sales again. It is a good day when your Hubby says "Go shopping and bring home some junk!" Besides the fun of the hunt, I am really enjoying the research involved when I find something new. I am also beginning to love some things that I would have said were not my style. Take that big pink beauty- Abingdon vase- for example. I love it! This is the 3rd piece I have found. One I am keeping, one sold on ebay and this one that I hope is meant for me to keep. I got the pieces at 3 different sales - spent $5.50- for all 3. They are all vintage and timeless.

I found this piece of Miramar of California piece yesterday for pennies.
And this hyalyn vase from 1963 today..... It was made in North Carolina. I paid a little more for this because it reminded me of my new dining room paint.
Now for a find that is a blast from the past for sure. A Fire King divided bowl with a candle warmer. Not at all my style...no...but yet I was fascinated with it and I realize I am beginning to become fond of retro space age stuff.... what next?

Italian filigree frames...or maybe those sweet little children's faces...

Finally something I am comfortable with- worn and shabby- vintage- with stories it could tell! But this too will head to ebay this week because I already have a couple in my laundry room-

I'm linking up with Thrifty Thursday with Leigh - I'll just call that more "research"!!

The Man and His Machine

Friday night we went to rent the machine- a floor sander. My Hubby spent his evening getting to know the machine and taking it for a test drive...he had sanded the whole floor before he came to bed!

Saturday he spent on his hands and knees with a hand sander getting in corners and around the baseboard where the big machine could not go.

You could really see how pretty the old wood is now-
On Sunday we started early- he finished painting some trim. I wanted to finish scraping around the window panes. He cleaned the floor one more time. We hung the valences. Then he spent hours staining the floor.

It looks so good- better than I ever imagined! There will be more layers to the window treatments- white sheers and floor length panels. I have them cut out, but I wanted to wait to make them until I could hang them. I hate to have to re-iron them once they have been sitting around.

It looks like we will not finish the floors until after the shower. You are supposed to wait 7 days before you have traffic on the poly. We may have to touch up the stain after the shower but that will be easier than repairs after the poly is down and is not ready for traffic!

My job for Monday- Clean 154 crystals so he can rehang the chandelier- There are 50 years of dust on them!
